1. How do I apply for HEAP benefits?

You can apply for HEAP benefits online at www.mybenefits.ny.gov or contact the Local Department of Social Services at 518-746-2300 for an application to be mailed to you. www.mybenefits.ny.gov

2. What information is needed from me when I apply for HEAP?

You will need a form of Identification, your social security number and your income (earned and unearned).

3. What kind of documentation do I need to submit in order to receive HEAP benefits?

You will need to submit a form of identification, copies of social security cards, copies of last four weeks of gross income for anyone in the household (earned or unearned), proof of vendor relationship, and proof of residence.

4. Is there a Cooling Component to the HEAP Program?

The HEAP Cooling Assistance Program will provide for the purchase and installation of air conditioners not to exceed $800 or a fan to eligible households. Whenever possible, window air conditioning units with an Energy Star rating will be installed. In circumstances where an air conditioner cannot be safely installed, a fan will be provided. Only one air conditioner will be provided per dwelling. No additional HEAP cash benefits are available.

Applications for the HEAP Cooling Assistance Program will be accepted beginning April 15, 2024 through September 30, 2024. Cooling benefits and services are provided on a first come, first served basis to eligible households.
