How do I obtain a building permit?: The 1st step is to fill out a Washington County permit application. Take the completed application to your local Town or Village Compliance Officer who will determine whether the project requires Zoning or Planning Board review. When the local Municipality is satisfied, the Compliance officer will sign a form that is included in the permit application packet. You may then submit to Washington County for a permit.

1. Do I need a building permit?: Building permits are needed for most projects. An exception is a small detached shed not exceeding 144 square feet.

2. Do I need an engineer or architect stamp on my plans?: A stamp is required for all projects except residential structures less than 1,500 square feet.

4. I’m replacing an existing wood stove and/or chimney. Do I need a permit or is it grandfathered?: A permit is required as replacing a wood stove or chimney is a new installation. Any new equipment must be Underwriter's Laboratories (UL) listed.

5. What is required for a demolition project?: A Demolition Permit is required. The building must be evaluated for lead and asbestos and proper abatement completed prior to demolition. Proof of proper utility disconnections are also required such as power, gas, water, and sewer.

6. Do I need a permit to install a Septic System or hook up to a municipal sewer?: A permit is required to install a septic system. Most if not all municipalities require a permit to hook to a municipal sewer system.
