[ARCHIVED] Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York (LASNNY) COVID-19 Response

LASNNY’s COVID-19 Legal Line 833-628-0087

Serving eligible low income people in Northeastern New York

Hours: Mon-Tues-Fri (9am – 5pm) — Wed & Thurs (9am – 7pm)

The global pandemic of COVID-19 is harming our community.

LASNNY has changed the way we work so that we can serve vulnerable people without endangering their health or the health of our dedicated advocates. Legal services are essential in times like these, and so we are mounting an incredible effort to adapt our services and prepare for what’s ahead.

The communities we serve will be the hardest hit by this pandemic—they are the first to feel the impact of job losses and health crisis. They have no resources to fall back on during this dangerous time, and their access to food, shelter and health care was precarious long before the virus arrived. Some measures are emerging to try and protect this population, such as a moratorium on evictions, but without legal advocacy, these efforts will not protect those people who need them most.

To meet this challenge, the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York (LASNNY) has created a comprehensive COVID-19 Legal Response which includes a Legal Line and a COVID-19 legal information web page. Call us at (833-628-0087).

LASNNY’s COVID-19 Legal Line (833-628-0087). Our lines are open for you to call with your COVID-19 civil legal issue. Our advocates will offer legal information, advice, referrals, brief service and representation to eligible low income people in Northeastern New York.

Hours: Mon-Tues-Fri (9am - 5pm) — Wed & Thurs (9am - 7pm).

LASNNY’s COVID-19 Webpage: “What’s changed? What Do You Need to Know?” Our staff continues to develop and update COVID-19 legal content for low income people and the community agencies which serve them.

Pro Bono Attorney Mobilization. LASNNY’s Private Attorney Involvement Program (PAI) is recruiting and training volunteer attorneys to supplement our staff’s response to COVID-19. We need volunteers more than ever, and we foresee a particular need for help with unemployment insurance, housing, and small business matters. We need volunteers more than ever during this crisis. Sign up to volunteer for LASNNY’s Private Attorney Involvement (PAI) Program today. Or email Jacob Drum, PAI Director at [email protected]

Client and Community Resources. In addition to the COVID-19 Legal Information web page, we continue to update our legal resources and Legal Lifelines. These cover areas such as employment, unemployment, health law, family law (with a focus on domestic violence), foreclosure, housing, tax, education, and consumer debt. Our staff is working to analyze new laws as they come out and to anticipate the legal needs which the pandemic will cause.

Expert Analysis for press and community agencies. Due to COVID-19, federal and state laws and regulations are changing rapidly. LASNNY has a team of experts to address questions from our community partners, legislators, and the media. Please contact our communications team with queries.
