[ARCHIVED] UPDATED: Deputies investigate Hartford fatality

According to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, on Sunday May 27, 2018 at 9:23 pm, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to State Route 196 in the Town of Hartford for a report of a person being struck by a vehicle. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies located a deceased male subject in the roadway.

The person was identified as Leon J. Clothier, 48, of Hartford, New York.

Clothier was struck by a westbound Jeep while in roadway. The female driver of the Jeep attempted to avoid Clothier however was unable to. She was not ticketed and there was no indication of
impairment by either alcohol or drugs. The driver stopped and called for help after the collision.


Sheriff Investigators continue to investigate the circumstances involving the accident including where the man had been before the accident and why he was in the roadway.

State Route 196 from County Route 43 to Shine Hill Road was closed for several hours as the accident was being investigated. The incident remains under investigation.
