INCIDENT SUMMARY: According to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, on February 4, 2018 at about 07:28 PM, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office arrested James Smith, III, 32, of Schoharie, NY after he was involved in a motor vehicle collision on State Route 196 in the Town of Hartford.
Smith had driven off the road striking a power pole causing it to shear off and fall in the roadway. Deputies on scene made contact with Smith who was not injured in the collision however when they interviewed Smith, he had strong odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath.
Smith failed several field sobriety tests and was arrested. He was transported to the Law Enforcement Center in Fort Edward where he was processed. Smith refused to give a breath sample to determine his blood alcohol content. He posted bail prior to arraignment and was released to a third party. He is due in Hartford Court on a later date.
