According to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, on October 15, 2017 at about 7:01PM, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office arrested Candice Pettiford, 27, of Hudson Falls after a clerk at a local convenience store reported a vehicle leaving the parking lot with the operator appearing intoxicated.
After patrols searched the area for the vehicle, Deputy Jason Diamond returned to the store to follow up with the clerk when the reported vehicle drove back into the parking lot. When contact was made with the driver (Pettiford), she was found to have two children, ages 4 and 7, in the vehicle.
Pettiford failed several field sobriety tests and was arrested. She was transported to the Law Enforcement Center in Fort Edward where she was processed. Pettiford submitted to a breath test which showed her blood alcohol content to be .14 percent. Child Protective Services were notified and the children were turned over to an immediate family member.
Pettiford was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a felony. The charge was made under the state’s Leandra’s Law, which makes it a felony to drive with a child younger than 15 in a vehicle. Pettiford was also charged with felony aggravated unlicensed operation in the 1st degree because of a suspended license related to a prior driving while ability impaired conviction along with misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child.
Pettiford was released to a third party and is due in Fort Edward Town Court on a later date.
