[ARCHIVED] Sheriff Murphy addresses pistol permit re-certification

When the “Safe Act” was first forced upon us I wrote an open letter in opposition. I stand by that letter and remain opposed to the “Safe Act” including the five year handgun re-certification process that has now come to fruition.

We have been advised that the State web site is now operational and re-certification letters have begun to be mailed to licensees across the State including those in Washington County.

This provision of the “Safe Act” is just another piece of the hastily enacted law that only affects law- abiding citizens. Criminals and those who unlawfully possess handguns are not concerned with the “Safe Act” or this re-certification process.

This provision also causes more work for the Counties by having to answer questions and directing license holders in the re-certification process. Other than address changes Counties do not have any control over the re-certification process.

With that said we will help our license holders in any way we can, but we would also request that if you have any questions regarding the “Safe Act” re-certification process, that you call the New York State Police Pistol Permit Bureau at 1-855-529-4867 or visit their website at
