[ARCHIVED] Dominican Republic man arrested after filing counterfeit paperwork at DMV

De La Cruz

According to Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Luis Daniel Mejias De La Cruz, 40, of the Dominican Republic.

The arrest is the result of an investigation into a complaint filed by NYS DMV against Mejias De La Cruz. It is alleged that he went to the Department of Motor Vehicle on Broadway in Fort Edward, produced a counterfeit United States Social Security card and a Counterfeit Permanent Resident card in an attempt to obtain a NYS Non-Driver ID card.

It is also alleged that Mejias De La Cruz used a false social security number on the application for the Non-Driver ID. An alert DMV clerk recognized the documents to be false and called DMV Investigator Douglas Pilato, who responded to the DMV office in Fort Edward to investigate and requested assistance from Sheriff's Office.

Luis Daniel Mejias De La Cruz has been charged with Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree a Class E Felony, and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Second Degree a class D Felony.

During the investigation, it was determined that Mejias De La Cruz is in the country illegally. He was arraigned in the Fort Edward Town Court and was remanded to the Washington County Correctional Facility in lieu of bail.

NYS DMV Investigator Douglas Pilato was assisted by Inv. Matt Lohret and Deputy John Latour of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office as well as I.C.E. Officer Jonathan Hill.
