According to Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Michelle Defoe,25, of Gansevoort.
The arrest is the result of an investigation into a complaint filed by the Washington County Department of Socials Services, alleging that Defoe filed applications for services knowing that some of the information that she provided on the applications was false.
As a result she is received $770.00 in benefits that she was not entitled to.
Defoe has been charged with welfare fraud in the fifth degree and petit larceny both class A misdemeanors and offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree a class E felony.
Defoe was released pending prosecution in the Fort Edward Town Court.
The Washington County DSS Welfare Fraud Investigations unit assisted in the investigation. The arrest was made by Inv. Matt Lohret.
