According to Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy, on November 2, 2015 at approximately 10:45am, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to 806 County Route 49 in the Town of Greenwich for a report of a suicidal male armed with a sword.
Deputies arrived at the residence and found Michael D. Bentley, 24, of Greenwich holding a sword and threatening himself and deputies. Bentley eventually dropped the sword and began struggling with several officer. Bentley was subdued after officers deployed a Taser. Bentley was then taken into custody without injury to himself or any of the officers.
Bentley was charged with menacing in the 2nd degree, criminal possession of a weapon, obstructing governmental administration in the 2nd degree and resisting arrest. He was arraigned in Greenwich Town Court and was remanded to the Washington County Jail for lack of $25,000 cash/$50,000 bond bail.
The arrest was made by Sheriff's Deputy D. Todd Riche and Sgt. Michael Distasio, assisted by the New York State Police.
