Governor Cuomo has issued a proclamation for the week of September 14, 2015 to be Sheriff’s Week in New York State. Sheriff’s Week celebrates the significant contributions made by the office of sheriff in county government and in the statewide criminal justice system.

“Governor Cuomo’s proclamation not only recognizes the work of the county sheriffs, but it also recognizes the dedicated and professional work of deputies, corrections officers and civilian employees who work in sheriff’s offices throughout the state,” said Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy.

Sheriff’s Week highlights the contributions made by the office of sheriff, the highest-ranking law enforcement office in the county. In addition to traditional public safety services, such as road patrol, criminal investigation and traffic control, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office patrols our lakes and waterways, securely transports inmates to our courts, professionally maintains our county jails and coordinates with the Office of Public Safety who dispatches all emergency services in the county.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office takes an active role in the community through programs like our Explorers Program for youths ages 14 to 20 who are interested in law enforcement, the R.A.D. Systems of Self Defense which offers programs for women, children, men and seniors and the Yellow Dot program which is a free program designed to help first responders provide life-saving medical attention during that first “golden hour” after a crash or other emergency.

The Sheriff’s Office also provides instructional presentations for our community on a wide range of public-safety related topics:

• Active-shooter awareness for school faculties
• Bicycle safety rodeos
• Career-day events at schools
• Child safety seat installation and inspection service
• Cyber safety / online predator awareness for students
• EMS and fire police in-service regarding MVA investigation
• Handgun safety courses for pistol permit applicants
• Juvenile fire-starter program
• Prom crash drills
• Rape aggression defense training
• Safe-drive program
• Scam-avoidance for senior citizen groups
• School safety and lock-down training
• Sheriff’s summer camp

Our agency has several specialized units including:

• Crime Scene Specialists
• DWI Patrol
• K-9 Unit
• Marine Navigation Unit
• Northern Branch of the Capital District Federal Drug Task Force
• SERT - Special Emergency Response Team
• Snowmobile Patrol
