Washington County residents are invited to participate in a public survey to assist the county in updating its Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan. The brief online survey is intended for non-farmers and asks questions about residents’ involvement, knowledge and support of local agriculture.
The Washington County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan was originally adopted in 1996 to identify strategies to promote agricultural viability and protect farmland. Many of the goals of the original plan were met, but the plan has become outdated. In February 2015, the county received a grant from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets to update the plan to better serve the agricultural industry in Washington County.
The county is partnering with Agricultural Stewardship Association (ASA) to help implement the grant and has formed a Steering Committee of farmers and ag-related businesses and organizations to provide input throughout the process. In addition to this public survey, which provides background information to the Steering Committee, the public will have an opportunity to comment on the draft plan which is expected to be available early next year.
The survey can be accessed on the Washington County website at www.washingtoncountyny.gov and ASA’s website at www.agstewardship.org , and will be available until August 1, 2015. The survey is only for Washington County residents. Please contact the Agricultural Stewardship Association at 692-7285 with any questions.
