[ARCHIVED] Arrest made in 2014 serious accident

Copeland

According to Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy, on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office arrested Robert Copeland, 65, of Fort Ann, NY. Copeland was charged with vehicular assault in 1st degree, a class D felony, DWAI-drugs an unclassified misdemeanor and failure to yield the right of way, a traffic infraction.

On June 6th 2014, Copeland was involved in a crash at the intersection of Dix Avenue and Dean Rd. in the Town of Kingsbury. At the time, Copeland pulled his 2009 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck in front of a 2008 Suzuki motorcycle operated by Thomas Cioffi. Mr. Cioffi and his passenger, Heidi Cioffi were thrown from the motorcycle. Mr. Cioffi was then run over by Copeland’s truck as Copeland stated he believed he had only run over a curb and continued to pull into a parking lot. Copeland stated that he was not aware that he had pulled in front of and been struck by the motorcycle. Heidi Cioffi was thrown into the bed of Copeland’s truck. Both Mr. and Mrs. Cioffi sustained serious physical injuries.

A blood test showed that Copeland had been operating his truck with prescription drugs in his system that he had been legally prescribed. A subsequent test and evaluation by an expert showed that the level of diazepam in his system was more than was prescribed.

Copeland was arraigned in the Town of Fort Ann Court and released on his own recognizance. The case is being further reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office for possible grand jury presentment.
