Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy has announced that the Washington County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in a special enforcement effort to crack down on impaired driving to coincide with the national Memorial Day holiday weekend. The statewide STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign effort will run through Tuesday, June 1st.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies will collaborate across the state in an effort to reduce the number of injuries and deaths related to impaired driving during this period.

Nationwide, Memorial Day is the second-deadliest holiday for drivers and passengers on U.S. roadways; the past two years, however, it was the deadliest holiday, as the National Safety Council estimated 343 to 420 people died on American roads in 2019.

We urge all motorists to drive responsibly during this holiday weekend and to never operate a vehicle or vessel while impaired.
